Vernon Philander earned his crust while Nottinghamshire crashed to defeat against Somerset in the English County Championship on Tuesday.

Having taken 4-56 in the first innings he added 3-47 in the second, on both occasions removing veteran Marcus Trescothick for 0. He also added Johann Myburgh (0) to his list, heaping more pressure on the embattled former Titan’s batting problems.

But while Philander’s efforts helped to restrict Somerset to 161, they still had a lead of 248. Notts were tied up immediately, collapsing to 114 with only Riki Wessels (30) and Philander, top-scorer with 38, offering any resistance. The damage was done by Tim Groenewald, the Martitzburg College protege, who took 4-41.

Lancashire’s Saffa AP partnership, Petersen and Prince, have the responsibility of putting their team in a winning position on the final day. Lancashire, having dismissed Leicestershire for 249, have a lead of 158 with eight wickets remaining. Petersen is on 15 off 29 balls and Prince on five. Lancashire owe their healthy position to Zimbabwean Kyle Jarvis, who took five for 69 in 19 overs.

Down in Cardiff, Jacques Rudolph added just one to his overnight total of 81, but at least his team was boosted by a swashbuckling 68 off 52 balls from Craig Meschede, born in South Africa but raised in Somerset. In another rain-hit day, Glamorgan ended on 314, to which Essex have countered with 183-4.

Middlesex’s South African Test batsman Nick Compton hammered 117 as his team accumulated 362 in reply to Hampshire’s 413, to which Gareth Berg contributed 50, batting at No 8. It was a painstaking ton, crafted of 237 balls with 18 fours.
