Faf du Plessis Faf holds key on Day 2

The Proteas can strengthen their position in the match and series with a determined batting performance on day two in Hamilton.

As many as 49 overs were lost on day one due to rain and a wet outfield. Word from Seddon Park is that day two will begin at 23:30 SAST, although one or two showers may disrupt play in the second and third sessions.

The Proteas are better placed than their Kiwi counterparts. While the weather could lead to a further loss of overs later in this the third and decisive Test, there is no need for the visitors to force the pace just yet.

South Africa currently enjoy a 1-0 lead in the series. While a win in Hamilton will be first prize, a draw will allow them to secure a series victory.

Captain Faf du Plessis (33 not out) and the combative Temba Bavuma (13 not out) will be at the crease when South Africa resume their first innings on 123-4. If Du Plessis, Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, and the lower order bat for two sessions or more, New Zealand will be in trouble.

SA 123-4 (1st innings) – Hashim Amla 50, Faf du Plessis 33 not out, Matt Henry 2-25, Colin de Grandhomme 2-43
