Hashim Amla’s fine knock of 73 off 76 balls wasn’t enough to get the Proteas over the line at Headingley on Wednesday.

The Proteas have plenty to rectify in the lead-up to the second ODI in Southampton. South Africa produced a poor team performance to lose by 72 runs in the first ODI against England in Leeds.

That said, Amla, one of South Africa’s key batsmen, made a positive start to the tour. The opener looked to be in fine touch during the early stages of the Proteas’ innings.

Amla hit Mark Wood for three fours in the sixth over. He had to work hard to pull the first two deliveries to the leg-side boundary. The third shot pierced the covers and reached the fence in quick time.

Amla and Faf du Plessis put on 112 runs for the second wicket. Had Amla batted on beyond the 25th over – an over which saw Wood trapping him lbw – the Proteas may have got closer to England’s total.
