    Ngidi dazzles on debut

Lungi Ngidi celebrates Ngidi dazzles on debut

Lungi Ngidi’s match-clinching performance of 6-39 at Centurion is our Play of the Day.

The Proteas went into day five at Centurion as favourites to win the Test, and ultimately the series after Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi fired late on day four to reduce India to 35-3.

The game was over before lunch on day five as Ngidi, who was well supported by Rabada and the Proteas fielders, made quick work of the visitors. The 21-year-old took four of the remaining seven wickets to help South Africa to a 135-run victory.

SECOND TEST REPORT: Ngidi six-for powers SA to series win

Ngidi finished with 6-39, the seventh-best innings figures by a South African on Test debut, and the second-best by a debutant at Centurion. It came as no surprise when he was named Man of the Match.

Ngidi took 7-90 across the two innings while also featuring in two important run-outs.

Ngidi’s direct hit at the bowler’s end saw Cheteshwar Pujara departing for 0 in India’s first innings and he was involved in the batsman’s second run in the second-dig too.

Early on day five, Ngidi chased the ball to the boundary and flicked it back to AB de Villiers, leading to a throw to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who managed to disturb the bails before the India No 3 could make up his ground.
