Rossouw, Amla triumph in one-day battle

Dean Elgar ... with an unorthodox stroke in the One-Day Cup. Rossouw, Amla triumph in one-day battle
    Published on May 22, 2018 | Leave a response

Rilee Rossouw emerged triumphant from a head-to-head battle with Dean Elgar as both scored nineties in the One-Day Cup.

He scored a brilliant 90 off 68 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, alongside Hashim Amla’s 28 off 21 balls (five fours), as Hampshire successfully chased Surrey’s Duckworth-Lewis target of 227 off 34 overs. They reached the target with seven balls remaining and four wickets in hand.

Together they put on 52 for the first wicket, which gave the innings a solid foundation, on which Joe Weatherley (46) was able to build a partnership of 52 until Rossouw was bowled by Rikki Clarke with the score on 167-3.

Earlier, Elgar scored a run-a-ball 91, with six fours and a six, which anchored Surrey to 262-7 when rain interrupted the game.

And that’s the way it stayed, for when the rain relented, Duckworth-Lewis sent Hampshire in to bat.

Elgar, who signed a short-term contract until the end of May, when he will start preparing for the Proteas tour of Sri Lanka in July, supported the innings until he fell at 198-6 after 37 overs. He was bowled by Gareth Berg, the Cape Town-born Italy international.

Berg had struck earlier to remove opener Will Jacks for 28, after he and Elgar had put on 34 for the first wicket in 5.5 overs.

It was a great bounce-back by Elgar, who scored just one in his first One-Day outing, against Somerset.
