Sinethemba Qeshile scores 50 on 19th birthday Rain interrupts proceedings in PE

The rain put a damper on proceedings after lunch in Port Elizabeth with the Lions on 105-2 and in a tricky situation against the Warriors in Port Elizabeth.

The Warriors resumed their innings on Tuesday morning on 305-7 with Sinethemba Qeshile and Andrew Birch at the crease. The young Qeshile – who finished on 58 runs off 111 balls, including 11 fours – promptly reached his half-century on his 19th birthday and, along with Birch’s quickfire 35 off 41 balls (11 fours), helped the Warriors post 345 all out before lunch in the first innings.

The Lions had a rocky start to their innings as they lost their opener Omphile Ramela (19 off 41 balls) before lunch and No 3 Dominic Hendricks (four off 36 balls) soon afterwards. It was up to veteran opener Stephen Cook and captain Temba Bavuma to consolidate the innings as they posted a 50-run third-wicket partnership before the rain curtailed proceedings for the rest of day.

The Lions will resume on 105-2 on Wednesday with Cook (48 not out off 95 balls) and Bavuma (24 not out off 23 balls) looking to make inroads on the Warriors’ first-innings lead.
