    Rudolph sets the tone

Jacques Rudolph got back into first-class mode in style as he anchored Glamorgan’s fighting first innings’ offering of 271-8 against Gloucestershire in the English County Championship.

He stood like a rock in scoring 68 off 149, trying to stop the rot, but there was little support. Colin Ingram made an effort and scored 21 of the second-wicket partnership of 40 in 12 overs, Chris Cooke went for 11 and Craig Meschede for 16. But a great tail-end fight brought Glamorgan to a competitive total.

Elsewhere, Richard Levi contributed 25 to Northants’ first innings total of 398 before being run out. He was unable to improve on that as Kent folded in their second innings to lose by an innings and 23 runs.

In a Royal London One-Day Cup match, Riki Wessels hammered a magnificent career-best 132 off 118 balls, with 12 fours and seven sixes to guide Nottinghamshire to a 49-run win over Middlesex. He fought a lone battle for much of the time as his teammates came and went, although Brendon Taylor stuck around for a while adding just 19 to a fifth-wicket stand of 57. Then Steven Mullaney helped hims put on 64 for the sixth wicket, at which point he was dismissed, presenting Dawid Malan with a catch in the deep, with the score on 206. The tail then wagged vigorously.

Middlesex got off to a cracking start with Malan (33) and Sam Robson (88) putting on 71 for the first wicket. But up stepped Imran Tahir, dismissing both and adding another to end with 3-38.
